CAP Readings...Change

From the way things were going in the 1950/60's I think that baldwin would be surprised in alot fo ways of what has happened to the United States and its advancement towards a country that doesnt care about skin color. Though rascism is still around it has changed alot towards the better. Baldwin would be especially surprised towards african-americans in political positions especially the recent election of Borak Obama. He might be upset though with how some of the ways that parts of african-american society has changed. Not bashing rapping but it has gotten out of hand. Degrading of women and songs about killing people doesnt shine good light on african-americans and i think that Baldwin would be a little upset about this. But Baldwin would see that the sacrifices of the past have bettered the future.

  1. Yes, I think you are right that Baldwin would not like what is going on in commercial rap, but I think he would also be willing to listen to other intellectuals who have a broader view. Does what we typically see and hear on BET or elsewhere in the commercial media represent all of what is going on in hip hop? Is hip hop an accurate or a total reflection of what is going on in African American culture?

  2. I dont think that what is seen on BET displays everything about hip hop. But to anyone who is is new to american society wouldn't know where to find out the truth about hip hop. But from what is in seen on cable tv it doesnt look very good. They wouldnt know where to look to find the good in hip hop. But hip hop is not an accurate reflection of what is going on in African American culture.

  3. Right. So where do we look for a more accurate reflection of what is going on in African American culture? And just as importantly, why is it that what is readily available promotes the horrible images that we do see? Why is it so hard to find the conscious rappers?
