Freedom Summer Prologue
Before I begin reading Freedom Summer I am going to ask a question about the book. Does this book also go into the civil rights movement and which part of it impacted the civil rights movement the most. From what ive read on the covers of the book I think this will be a book that will keep my attention and make me wonder about how people can impact such a great movement and how much willpower it took to keep on the right track for what they believed in.

McAdam's narrative is primarily about the events of the summer of 1964, but it is important that you pay attention to the larger historical context, not only the events that led up to 1964, but also the impact of that summer on the future political and social involvements of the volunteers. Why and how did these college activists subsequently become involved in new organizations such as Students for a Democratic Society, that protested against the Vietnam War, and in the women's movement? How did they also help to bring change to already-existing groups, such as labor unions, or choose to go into certain professions, such as teaching, public law, or government?
